Educating Boys: Bridging Gaps, Building Futures

Boys and men in America are struggling across multiple dimensions — in education, employment, mental health, and family life — and policymakers are finally taking notice. Governors across the country have launched initiatives aimed at supporting male well-being, signaling a potential turning point in public discourse. Yet awareness alone is insufficient. The challenges are deep and structural and demand rigorous evidence and thoughtful policy rather than symbolic gestures.
This volume focuses on K–12 education as a critical domain where gender gaps are stark, measurable, and actionable. Boys consistently trail girls in reading and behavioral outcomes, with consequences that ripple into adulthood. Drawing on scholarship from multiple disciplines, the contributors examine what we know about these gaps, why they exist, and what schools and systems can realistically do about them. The goal is not to pit boys against girls, but to promote success for all.
