This book is helpful for students to link the theories and perspectives to their application in practice. This is a task in their assignment.
It is a really useful text to introduce theory to students, but then provides a thorough text to consolidate learning in year 2.
I felt some of the underpinning theories of Sociology and Psychology were not explained as being the key in some interventions (eg life snake work and links to Psychology)
This book is accessible and informative and helps to unravel some of the misconceptions that students have about theory.
It is up to date.I think the book will appeal to students. I like the activity questions and case studies dotted throughout the book
This is a really helpful introduction to the relationship between, and application of, theory to practice. It is accessible and is as relevant to students as it is to lecturers in communicating such abstract concepts, as it is to social workers and practice teachers supporting students' learning.
Strong introductory text for the novice.
provides a good base line introduction to theory and how it links into practice supporting the individual with decision making and ethical decision making. Inclusion of a greater range of theory would be beneficial and thinking how you distinguish between the different approaches i.e. strengths and solutions focused
An essential text for all students, especially when considering transferable knowledge and study skills etc to practice learning. Information is conveyed in a manner that is easy to grasp and students enabled to see relationship of theory in academic terms as applicable to practice.
I particularly liked the emphasis on 'deep thinking' in this text. It is encouraging a complex and critical approach to applying theory to practice which I would actively promote with my students. With regard to what I don't like about it, I wounder if the author should have been more explicit in referring to anti-oppressive practice. Students struggle with this term and it might have been useful to have included clearer connectuions here.
Clearly written, informative and useful to students. Good chapter on values and ethics which will promote questioning of practice.
This is an excellent book that will be of use to those contemplating a career in social work through to those who are qualified and are supervising student social workers on placement.

Not necessarily an essential text but provides a deeper understanding of the application of theory to practice. Useful for year 1 students.
The overall glossary was very helpful as well as the activities included in each section.

Very accessible, clear, up to date. Brilliant for PLO1 and PLO2 on both BA & MA Social Work. Also useful for Practice Educators - I will recommend on Introduction to Practice Education which I run.
