Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Foundations for Practice
- Frank Wills - University of Wales College, Newport, University of South Wales, UK
- Diana Sanders - Counselling Psychologist and BABCP Accredited Cognitive Psychotherapist in Independent Practice, Oxford
In their established introduction to contemporary CBT theory and practice, Diana Sanders and Frank Wills show how therapeutic change takes place across a network of cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning. They explain the central concepts of CBT and illustrate - with numerous case examples - how these can effectively be put into practice at each stage of the therapeutic process. The revised book now includes:
- Recent developments in CBT, i.e., new settings and applications including guided self-help, computerized CBT, IAPT & stepped care
- Two brand new chapters on mindfulness and increasing access to CBT
- Extra case studies, chapter previews, exercises and further reading, plus an appendix of further resources
- Coverage of a wider range of client issues
This continues to be the ideal companion for those working - or training to work - in the psychological therapies and mental health.
I would recommend this introduction to CBT to any trainee, but especially those preparing to work in IAPT services. The chapters on the therapeutic realtionship and how to work with emotion in CBT are particularly helpful and well written, while avoiding becoming too technical or fuzzy! The use of case studies to illustrate how theoretical aspects of therapy translate into practice is particularly helpful.
Excellent core book that is great for introduction courses and beginnings of practice. the UK focus makes this an excellent source. Will be course core text book
A comprehensive review of CBT theory and practice
An excellent introduction to this topic. I would highly recommend this book.
This is a really good book that addresses much of the curiculum of the CBT modules we offer.
I personally liked the level of detail and applicability to practice of the content. This book will be of use for novice and experienced practitioners and I feel it is a good resource for any therapist.
An excellent updated overview of the shape of current CBT. I'm recommending this as a core-text for our PGC CBT course.
A good all round book that I use mainly for the teaching of qualified staff (nurses, social workers).

A good, easy to follow introductory book for all trainee therapists. From planning to formulations, it provides a practical and up to date guided approach to practising CB. The book addresses key important aspects and competencies, from initial assessment through planning and formulation.
The addition of Chapter 12 covering CBT in the context of IAPT is helpful and informative, providing the reader with an insight into the intricacies of working in this Service.
This book is a good academic resource for students and trainee counsellors. Linkinging theory to practise with clear jargon-free explanations, the authors enable the reader to get a true sense of how to use CBT to work with a wide range of client problems/difficulties. Clinical examples help further illustrate how to apply the various key concepts to achieve emotional and behavioural change.
The chapter on the wider applications of CBT is informative and it helps further cement CBT’s invaluable position in an effective health care system.
A good book to aid the understanding of cognitive behaviour. Although it is specific to one area it is certainly worth considering as a purchase.
